Yes, a fantastic family legacy. Eleanor gave me a personal tour of their small operation in 2017. I was able to pick up what was then a limited production of Harris Tweed Hanna flat caps.

I thought folks here would appreciate the reply I received from Hanna Hats:
"Dear Pete,

Thank you for your email My Father John Hanna Started selling into LLBEAN in the Mid 70 ‘s would you believe, I am 42 now and when I was 14 I traveled to Free port main to sell Hanna Hats to LLBean with my father 28 years ago.

Sadly My father John Hanna Passed away very suddenly in May this year after a Heart Bypass.

He is sadly missed .

He loved fishing and he loved LLbean

Thank you for your email

Regards

Eleanor Hanna ( Third Generation)"

If you cannot find anything something that I have done that works; I have ordered hat ribbons/bows from custom hatters as it wasn't worth the cost of mailing the hat back and forth. (I don't have a hatter in my town either) They sent me the ribbon open ended but ready to attach. With even limited sewing skills I attached the ribbon work to the hat. You might even be able to find a tailor or seamstress in the UAE to attach it for you for a few dollars.

belfastboy,

I tried this in the past with a shop that does clothes alterations and they totally botched the black band on a panama hat even though I provided them with the band and all they had to do was stitch it on. People simply do not wear fedora style hats here.

I received a couple of emails directly from John in March of this year. He responded to my inquiries regarding a few of their flat caps (I have two tweed and one linen). He seemed like a very genuine person and it was a shock to learn of his passing in May. I'm glad the family business lives on in his memory.

Hey all, a quick update. I just came back from a visit to the hat store (Witting, world famous in Groningen) and after explaining the situation, the gentleman behind the counter basically said: "so, you're looking for a nice panama!". Well yes, and long story short. I bought a nice cream white panama, wide brimmed and for 99€ not that big of an investment. The akubra is something I'm going to put on my wishlist for my birthday. Thank you all for your help!

When you buy formed hats, you know immediately if the crown height is a good look or not.

But when buying an open crown; how do you know if it's too tall to begin with?

Will you still be able to get it low enough to look right?

Yes, my experience has been there is lots of room to play with. When I buy a custom I usually get a 6" open crown. I think the Akubra Campdraft is a touch lower open crown. What is your sweet spot for the crown post bash?

It's more of a question for me if I can keep it high enough.

With an OC, you get to make it what you want. I like to have at least 5 1/2" OC and love anything higher. That way I can keep a nice, high crown and have a deep, well-defined crease. This is especially true if you like diamonds or other similar creases.

My sweet spot is pretty close to what the Akubra Stylemaster hat is;

4-1/4 inches at the front, rising to 4-3/4 inches on the side and then down to 3-7/8 inches in the back. My Stetson Chatham is 4 1/2 inches at the crown.

I'm thinking about getting the Adventurer in moonstone color. It's got a 5 1/2 inch crown height to begin with. That means trying to lower the crown almost 2" in the back.

My concern is whether or not I can shape it to a teardrop crease at my preferred heights without having a bowl.

Hey everyone, quick simple question that I couldn’t find an exact answer to after searching several threads.

Is the ribbon on the sweatband functional or decorative? I was wiping the sweat off and my fingernail snagged the ribbon and almost took it clean off, just one little thread holding it to the sweat. Just curious if it’s worth tacking back on or no worries if doesn’t effect any integrity of the hat.

I think it is decorative and also hides the sweatband's stitching.

the little one inside by the back?

Decorative.

once upon a time, some hats had this as an additional means for size adjustment. For some reason they just kept putting them in hats.
