Many threads now are all about recent creations, cheap straws, and other modern items.

I am a collector and love old threads. I've noticed that as time continues old threads are constantly overlooked. I've posted in many to bring them up, with ZERO engagement from anyone else. A few years back. the lounge was a wonderful balance of old and new, and now the scales are heavily tipped to the modern crowd.

I'll just see my "elitist self prophet being" out of here, since it seems you are out to ridicule.

My personal observations: you are one of the people who keep me coming to the Lounge. You have never given off the slightest whiff of elitism. Although my hat size keeps me from personally playing the vintage game, I enjoy the education and the beautiful hats. I also take inspiration from your vintage photos and commission customs based on them. You have also given sincere feedback on my modern hats that I much appreciated; even though they aren’t hats you’re personally interested in.

There is room here for us all and I’m hoping that my favorite contributors of vintage hats don’t pull back; we’re already missing too many.

Yes, I was having problems with the cut and pasting of two quotations. My reply kept appearing within the quoted text each time I moved it outside. So eventually I just scrapped the whole thing and started again.

For Barbara Feldon fans, Bill Gaines once said (I think it was him) everyone knows Mad Magazine's best years were the years when they were reading it. Same way with the Fedora Lounge. The beautiful thing (beside the people, many of whom I consider good friends) is that fifteen or so years since inception there is a wealth of great stuff buried in here. Many photographs are gone, sadly. But most of the fossils unearthed collectively by lounge members over the years remain buried here to be enjoyed. You can trace the development of knowledge over time... follow our most experienced FL minds get smarter from their growing collections and from the research of their fellow loungers thrown into the pot. You monitor the threads that interest you. I remember one prominent Lounge member of his day saying he used to bump old posts just to push the Akubra threads down a little when they rose to the surface (there used to be many more). I follow the Facebook hat communities. I often share links to Lounge threads when the discussion touches on the beginnings of topics that are covered in depth here.

It's hard for anything to remain fresh and stimulating for long periods. I deeply respect those who have been here for a decade or longer, still post regularly and still share comments of encouragement for those who've just found the place.

The best way to pose a question and get an answer is to ask Google, with the words "the Fedora Lounge" in the wording. You'll be amazed at the fossils you'll dig up when you poke around. Try not give in to temptation and leave in a huff. And try not to get thrown out. Somewhere in the middle is the main sequence, where most of our stars shine for a long time.

I didn't take it personally. I should have more clearly indicated the intended jest. I wouldn't really call the hat a trilby, though it is close.

And anyway it is a not especially interesting hat beyond its simple good looks. No insightful or informative banter will result.

in fact, since I collect mostly new or NOS hats, many purists will do best to ignore my posts altogether I suppose, i.e. those not yet already doing so. I am still learning so nothing to see here. Another lesson learned.

My friend, every post is a contribution. that's what makes the lounge great. This places covers so much, the headwear section is just a tiny blip. outside of the clothing subforums, there are forums for photos, history, etc. I enjoy almost every post I come across, sadly I rarely have much time to really reply in the "what hat are you wearing" threads. I need to try to adjust my time schedule, and actually have the ability to sit down and let folks know that even if they have a modern piece, it is appreciated. If we all stuck to old threads, yes it would become monotonous.

My passion is history, automotive and hat related, because without the past, we wouldn't have the present. But the present creations are what keep the progression happening

I greatly appreciate that my friend! I was a huge fan of your recent commission hats. The variety was like eye candy. I enjoyed the variety of colors and styles, and look forward to seeing what other pieces your mind comes up with! Creativity is endless, and brotha you solidified that

I have commented on a few that stand out to me, because some feature really does draw my attention, but I'm not one to comment on every hat that looks nice - I don't have time or room to comment on all the nice hats seen here! It's not my nature to draw attention to myself, but I will share when I think something may be of interest or value to others. And I think the folks that post in that thread do so out of the spirit of sharing, not to "brag".

I'm stuck firmly in the "modern" crowd because of my 7-3/4 hat size, but I do enjoy seeing the vintage hats here and learning about them. So, I appreciate both ends of the spectrum, for different reasons. I hope folks at both extreme ends keep posting.

I do take interest in some of the auxiliary threads posted here, but there are others that I have no interest in, and so I just skip them. The fact that I'm not interested in them doesn't reduce their values to others that are interested. I do agree that the loss of many of the pictures on the older threads (like the "How to make a hat ribbon" thread that just re-surfaced) makes them of little value to me, and I'd really like to see that wealth of information restored if at all possible.

Most of all, I appreciate the civil, respectful, positive attitudes that are the norm here, and I hope this bump in the road is short-lived and the dust settles soon.

Please excuse this little experiment folks, but this recent discussion has made me feel a bit nostalgic (and more than a little pissed off) for the lost photos in those old, informative threads that taught me so much about hats and hat making. It still rankles that those photos (more of an educational archive for me) were so unceremoniously taken from us. I was researching the infamous Photobucket "hostage taking" debacle and was curious to see if, as one article stated, I could retrieve, save, and re-post my photos from that hosting site. I only have about a dozen photos stored there as I've always found it easier to upload directly from my computer. The random photo below is of a pre-conversion Resistol. I logged into my P-bucket account, saved the picture to my desktop, and uploaded it here. So it seems the photos themselves aren't lost, just the linking capability. Of course it would be a lot to ask for the original posters of those "lost" photos to go back, retrieve, and re-post them, but one can always hope that some will.

Regarding the Tapatalk app, whenever pics are posted, I always get doubles of whatever has been uploaded. Is there a way to remedy this?

I get it too. Always have. The photos, followed by thumbnails of the photos. I have no idea how to correct this.

Thanks Bowen but I'm sure no one expects any real change to come from all this. It is what it is. When the serial posting of Facebook-like comments started last yr & was confined to the WHAYWT thread I started skipping over it. If I looked at all it was early in the morning top page only, or because I noticed maybe someone whose posts & hats I admire had made a new post. I just stayed off the biggest thread in the hat forum...problem solved! But now the serial posting & Facebook-like comments have carried over to most other threads. And just to be clear, I'm not talking about casual comments we all make about the weather, sports, music or pop culture. I'm talking about the need to make post after post, page after page of one-liner comments over the most average or mundane thing as if to keep a conversation going. That's the influence social media has had on the FL. I'm sure now it's inevitable.

Although I'm not one of them, I don't think hating Akubra hats for example, is being elitist. But for the most part the largest percentage of Akubra information (except for posts bitching about them) has probably been confined to ~3 Akubra threads & the WHAYWT thread. If you're an Akubra hater skip over those...problem solved. I know this Akubra thing has been a big flashpoint for a long time. Maybe all Akubra threads need to be consolidated into one subform & all Akubra posts confined to that subform.

Maybe someone needs to start a subform called "Hats From Amazon.com" & confine all such hats & posts there, then we can skip that too. I agree with Justin on his "banana Republic" Trilby analogy. More subforms is really the only way to accommodate everyone...you get the idea.

Sure, why not?! A 'What Vintage Hat Are You Wearing Today?' thread, and a 'What Modern Hat Are You Wearing Today?' thread. I'm sure that none of the modern hat guys will feel slighted at all.

Me? I'm over it. I will continue to look at all the hats posted in all the threads and appreciate the ones I appreciate, old or new. Without making even subliminally disparaging comments about any of them, or group of them.

And believe me, I don't love all of them.

Talking about the loss of picture links leads me to another question, because I do spend time reading through older threads in an attempt to learn:

Why do the links in older threads take you to a completely random topic? In other words, in a thread about hat etiquette, I’ll click a link to a thread someone posted that they say will explain hat etiquette in elevators, but the link takes me to a thread about hat band colors. The posts are linked/referenced by the post numbers, so I wonder if the post numbers got jumbled somewhere along the way?

Did this happen with the latest upgrade, or has it been a problem for a while now? It seems to do this both on my phone and computer.
