I haven't been on the Lounge awhile, my Mum took ill three weeks ago and passed away after nine harrowing days in hospital. It was devastating for all of us in the family.

Thank God no one was killed in Christchurch. Stoked to hear your family's okay Smithy.

Sad times. My sincerest condolences. How is your father?

Traumatised is the word for it. We had a very strong 5.1 quake this morning that was apparently from a different fault only 10km from here, and very close to the surface. It has caused more damage, and everybody in Christchuch is in a state of fear.

Everybody is living on shattered nerves as we now enter our fifth day of aftershocks, with no end in sight. The city is losing beautiful old buildings, many people have lost their homes, and nobody knows how bad this is going to get before it's over :(

I'm sorry to hear it Lareine. I'm just about to give my Dad a buzz and see how he's doing.

Fingers crossed all this shaking finishes smartish.

Thanks for the kind messages all. Talbot, Dad passed in 1994. It's hard but we're getting by one day at a time.

Quakes in NZ, floods in Victoria - does it ever end?

It's been a rough old week down in our part of the world.

I'm hoping that all the rain that Victoria has had so far over this year means that we won't be in for any devastating bush fires. At least the drought is officially over so the bush shouldn't be nearly as dry as last summer or more importantly the summer before.

I suppose like most Kiwi boys I learnt to do Ka Mate at school, although I would never do it in public - skinny white chaps doing it just doesn't cut the mustard.

As a Kiwi it is one of those "hair standing up on the back of the neck" moments of national pride when you watch it, especially live at a big test match. And it has a very long and proud tradition. The Maori Battalion was even using it for its original purpose, before going into battle in North African and Italy in WWII.

But I'm not for every other bloody Kiwi sports team using it, it really should be the domain of the NZ rugby union and league teams.

I don't mind Kapa O Pango but it doesn't have the same resonance as Ka Mate.

I MISS OZ.....:(

I'm an Irish gal, who lived in Oz for a spell and have family there and tonight I bumped into a few sydney-siders in a pub in Dublin and my tummy did somersaults, really miss living there and miss the Australian banter.

What I love most about Australia apart from the laid back culture is the fact that people don't ask you about your job within the first few minutes of meeting each other, so different to here, where you are defined by what you do. Very much looking forward to getting back there!

I lived in North Queensland and Sydney and have so much yet to see, its such an amazing country, its a shame many of my country men and ladies just go over for their working holiday and don't really embrace everything about it, that said - I've never ever heard anyone come back with a bad story so that must be saying something - not bad ey?!

Theres some great music there too - miss that also! :(
Looking forward to meeting some FL folk when I get back over
xx

I agree. Its a great thing to see and unmistakeable as a warrior challenge.

I don't see the Kiwi Curling Team carrying it off.
