Yeah, vintage can be hard to find good hats in large/Xlarge sizing. You can finds cheap mid to small sizes far cheaper and more often.

Here in Australia most cheap ones sell on a place called "Gumtree", Facebook market place and eBay as already suggested also. Though I've seen them asking $500-$1k on eBay for really good vintage hats here in popular sizes.

Other thing with hats is look and ask around here when you see something as there are knock off's about. I saw a 5x or 7x Stelson, never heard of them myself prolly a knock-off Stetson.

This is a great thread!

Alright, two questions.

1. Does anyone know where I could get a high quality black leather motorcycle cap in a military style, y'know, the UK Rocker kinda deal? I know there's tons of 'em on eBay/Etsy/etc. but I really want to only pay money for quality. Otherwise I wouldn't be on TFL to begin with.

2. Facebook's been spamming me with Traclet website ever since I began looking into head-wear so... Are they any good? I know Sterkowski is great and I plan on ordering a coupla hats from them but they don't have the exact style I'm after so...

Thanks a bunch!

Hey, not sure if you ever received a response but Keith Lo Bue of TheWellDressedHead might be able to help you out. I don't see the particular style you're describing on his Etsy site, but it may be worth reaching out to him anyway. While I don't personally own any of his caps there are plenty I wish I did. His caps are highly regarded around here. Check out the What Cap Are You Wearing Today? thread and you'll see many of his fine examples.

How versatile is the Stetson color Sage with a jean's jacket, t-shirt, etc?

Just discovered a seller has my favorite Stetson Roadster hat available in Sage.

That hat of Deadly listed on Ebay is a great hat and if you could get it close to the opening bid it is a steal. I have sent you a PM.
Thanks for your response and I will definitely keep you in mind about the custom hats for sure...currently tho I’m trying to find a hat that’s already made that has that 60s touch to it so if you know any 60s styled hats by Stetson or any other hat maker I would love to hear about it

Yea I’m definitely going to keep custom in mind for the future but right now just trying to find a hat already made that has that 60s touch and vintage is hard to find so I’m just trying to find a website or specific hats that I can just search up

My PM is about having some vintage Barbisio's that just needs refurb. It is close to your size and I can reblock it to fit.

Hello from Germany!

Does anyone have any experience with a wool hat called "Ealing Poet" from Christy's London?

I can't hardly find any information or Fotos of this hat on the internet.

Should be like the "adventurer fur felt" from Christy's....

Nothing wrong with those Barbisios! Great idea.
Yea it’s definitely something I’m going to keep in mind...My next hat is probably going to be a Saxon or Dobbs Jet 707...but don’t know when I’m going to get it cuz I just purchased a Goorin bros fedora...and with this stupid pandemic shutting everything down there’s now where to wear these great hats so I’m going to try to wait a couple months

Once you get your hat collecting legs grounded start upgrading your collecting. Goorin Bros hats are generally not good buys. They make inexpensive hats and charge more than they are worth. I am also not a Stetson fan for their lower cost hats. See the post in today's Lounge about the dye coming off the hat onto the wearer's hands. I suggest you consider saving up your $$ and buying quality and buying fewer hats. They offer much better value. Look to either vintage or custom rather than low end hats.

“Buying quality and buying fewer hats.” Sound advice that I didn’t follow myself, but looking back I wish I would have.

I got lucky as my first hats were Akubra....a local hat shop carried them but they were stupid expensive. It was a revelation when I discovered that a custom hat was not off the charts and I could justify the expense.....not much more than my entry level Akubras ( bought my first customs from Mike at NW Hats when he was a steal). My errors were largely in the pursuit of 'vintage'....many errors, wrong turns made in that pursuit. I have about a dozen vintage all bought from known sellers here in the Lounge....so no mistakes made there. The issue now is now that I am making hats the urge to experiment with other felt suppliers, other techniques has opened up an entire new rabbit hole......that and the collecting of vintage grograin ribbon.

An observation more than a question. Sometimes I think too much, ya know! And so I was thinking, why can't a device be made that would be an "adjustable block"? I don't know, perhaps a mechanical/pneumatic bladder inside a hard, flexible shell and you would just "program" the dimensions into the computer and the computer would adjust the block to the correct hat size and taper and all that jazz. In these days of technology and specialty materials, it doesn't seem like it would be that difficult and it would certainly alleviate hatters from having to have hundreds of blocks in every shape and size.

Okay, since no one had an answer to the question about time period frame for steel in the reeding... Does anyone know if there is a Bond hat thread here on the lounge? I've tried multiple ways of searches both here and online using 'fedora lounge' as well as Bond hats coming up empty as well, but for a couple of posts mentioning a bond hat. Thanks for any help with this
